猿橋
Living in Yamanashi, I realized once again that here is surrounded by mountains. To go to other prefectures, we will always have to go over mountains or go down along rivers. As of today, there are many tunnels and bridges, but it is easy to imagine that hand-dug tunnels and wooden bridges were important transportation structures in the past.
The Koshu Kaido, which runs from the Kofu Basin towards the Kanto region, passes through Otsuki City, and here there is a wooden bridge with a unique structure called “Saruhashi” it means monkey bridge. According to legend, this bridge was built by Iranians from western China in the 7th century AD. He was inspired by seeing monkeys building bridge by own body supporting each other. Although it is a legend, it is quite old, but it is amazing that it is still being reproduced to this day even adding new technology and keeping old appearance.
山梨に住んで改めて実感したのは周りをぐるりと山に囲まれたていること。他県に出るには必ず山越えするか川沿いに下っていくことになる。現在はトンネルや多くの橋がかけられているが、昔は手掘りのトンネルや木造の橋が重要な交通建造物だったのは想像に難くない。
甲府盆地から関東方面に抜ける甲州街道は大月市を通っているがここに猿橋という名前の独特の構造を持った木造の橋がある。言い伝えでは600年代に中国西域からきたイラン系の人物が猿が互いに体を支えあって橋を作ったのを見て造られたと言われている。伝説なのだがいずれにして相当古いもので、これが現在まで再生を繰り返して存在していることに驚かされる。くわしくはWikipediaを見てください。
A little downstream from Saruhashi is the Yatsuzawa Power Plant No. 1 aqueduct bridge built during the Meiji period. This is a contrasting modern concrete structure, built during the Meiji period when Japan was in a rush to modernize, and is still in use today.
猿橋の少し川下には明治期に建造された八ツ沢発電所一号水路橋が残っている。こちらは対照的な近代的なコンクリート造りで、日本が近代化を急いだ明治期につくられ現在でも使われている。
